Small rooms and condo living do not mean you have to stick to beige. Mid-century colour, with its terracotta, mustard, teal and olive, can make a compact space feel warm and considered when it is used with a little restraint.
Choose one wall
Rather than spreading colour everywhere, focus it on one wall. A single bold print, or a pair, gives the room a clear focal point without crowding it. The diagonal bands in Sunset Diagonal draw the eye along a wall, which can make a narrow room feel longer.
Repeat colours in small doses
Pick two colours from your artwork and repeat them in cushions, a vase or a throw. The repetition ties the room together, so the art feels part of the space rather than something added on top of it.
Let light frames do the work
In smaller rooms, white or oak frames keep things feeling open. Black frames are wonderful, but in a compact space one or two is usually enough.
Think about scale
It is tempting to buy small art for a small room, but several tiny pieces can look cluttered. One medium piece, around 50 x 70 cm, often looks calmer and more confident than four little ones.
Use botanical shapes to soften corners
Organic, rounded forms soften the hard lines of compact furniture. A piece like Teal Arch brings in colour and the feeling of greenery, even if your space has no room for real plants.
